The Bethlehem Chapel

The Bethlehem Chapel

Jan Hus was a religious reformer who preceeded Martin Luther by 100 years.  His philosophy was so nearly identical to Luther's that it's fair to style Luther as a Hussite.  Hus condemned (among other things) the practice of selling indulgences and asserted that the church should not involve itself in secular matters.  The Bethlehem Chapel in Prague was the center of Hussite activity until the church applied deadly force to put down the movement.

This image shows Hus being burned at the stake, an event which happened in Constanz, Germany on July 6th, 1415.  Hus is still held in high regard by the Czechs despite his condemnation as a heretic.
